Owls Fall in First Doubleheader vs Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waterville, ME – The UMPI Baseball team traveled to Waterville, Maine to play in their first North Atlantic Conference game of the year. The Owls took on the Thomas Terriers in a doubleheader. The Owls lost both games, 8-1 and 7-3.

Game 1

8-1, Thomas

Senior captain, William Stinson (Norridgewock, ME) started on the mound for the Owls pitching the first two innings, finishing with two strikeouts and allowing four earned runs. Roberto De La Pena (Porterville, CA) and Zach Butterfield (Whiteriver Jct. VT) both pitched two innings each as well. Daniel May earned the win on the mound for the Terriers, pitching five innings and finishing with four strikeouts and allowed zero runs and five hits.

It was all Terriers early with a four-run second inning. The runs came off a two-RBI single, a fielder's choice, and another single before the inning ended. Another run in the third, and three more in the fourth inning gave the Terriers an 8-0 lead.

It was not until the top of the sixth, when first year player Dalton Gillis (Middleburg, FL) singled up the middle to bring Stinson home for the Owls first run of the game. The Terriers were able to continue their defensive efforts and put the game away in seven innings.  Stinson led the Owls in hits with two and scoring the only run for the Owls.

Game 2

7-3, Thomas

Nathan Church (Dover Foxcroft, ME) got his first start on the mound for the Owls in game two. Church would pitch the first 4.2 innings, finishing with four strikeouts and allowing six hits. Roberto De La Pena (Porterville, CA) and Jordan Hanscom (Lincoln, ME) each would get a look at the mound for 1.1 innings between them. Dylan Copeland earned the win at the Mound for the Terriers, finishing the game with seven strikeouts, allowing five hits and only one run.

Another early start for the Terriers gave them a one-point lead in the first inning. It was not until the third inning that the Owls would tie the game at one. A single by Joseph Blake (Standardsville, VA) followed by a single and a SAC fly, brought Blake to third base. Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) then singled to left field to bring the run home and tie the game.

The Terriers were quick to bring back their lead. A three-run fifth inning, followed a three-run fourth inning brought the Terriers lead to six runs, 7-1. In the top of the seventh, the Owls looked to make a run at this tough comeback. Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) was able to bring pinch runner Campton Tinkham (Manchester, ME), runner for Church who singled, home on a fielder's choice. A single by Stinson led to Blake scoring another run making the score 3-7. Unfortunately, for the Owls this was not enough to give them the win as the Terriers put the game away.

The Owls will look to bounce back in another doubleheader vs Thomas College. Tomorrow's doubleheader will start at 1:00pm.
