Owls Earn First NAC Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waterville, ME – The Owls baseball team finished out their first North Atlantic Conference weekend with another doubleheader vs Thomas College Terriers (10-19, 5-3). The Owls (4-19, 1-3) would split the final day with a 1-0 win in the second game, despite losing the first game of the day 11-6. The Owls 1-0 shutout was led by Bailey Corley's (Lake Stevens, WA) complete game on the mound.

Game 1 (11-6 – Terriers):

How it happened:

The Owls found themselves down early as they gave up three runs in the first inning, coming off a couple hits and a couple walks. The Owls quickly bounced back with a three-run inning themselves in the top of the third. Scoring off an RBI single by Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA), followed by some nifty base running by the Owls, resulting in Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) scoring on an error, and an RBI double by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) brought in the final run of the inning. The Owls kept the Terriers quiet, until the fifth innings where an error by the Owls would haunt them later in the inning. With two outs, the Terriers scored three runs off a single, a double and a passed ball. The Owls added one more run in the sixth to cut into the lead, although this was not enough as the Terriers scored five more runs in the sixth to put the game away. A first career homer by Jones and a double from Burns was not enough to rally a comeback in the seventh.

On the mound:

Nicholas Perfitt (Houlton, ME) earned the start on the mound for the Owls, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing 12 hits and walking six batters. The Terriers scored ten earned while Perfitt was on the mound. Jones would finish the game, recording the last out with a strikeout. Tommy Smith earned the win for the Terriers, pitching 5.1 and James Lappin earned the save, getting the final out of the game.

At the plate:

Jones led the way for the Owls, scoring two runs and hitting two for three including his first career homer. Burns also hit two for three, hitting two RBI's and scoring one run. The Owls finished the game with eight hits as a team and left seven on base.

Game 2 (1-0 – Owls):

How it happened:

Bailey Corley (Lake Stevens, WA) pitched the complete shut out in the Owls first NAC win of the year. With his defense behind him the Owls only allowed five hits and no runs through the seven innings, and only having one error on the game. In the first three innings, the team totaled only four hits (three being by the Owls) as the pitchers battled it out. The Owls put the only points on the board in the top of the fourth. Jacob Moreno's (Bourne, MA) single got him on base, before making his way to third. Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) would hit an RBI single to drive the only run of the game in, with two outs on the board. Despite runners in scoring position in two of the final three innings the Owls defense put the game away in seven innings.

On the mound:

Corley (1-4) allowed only those five hits, and walked three batters. While striking out two, Corley earned his first win on the mound and gives him a 1-0 record on the mound vs NAC opponents. Tyler Cantey (0-2) pitched the first four innings for the Terriers, giving up five hits and one earned run.

At the plate:

With this defensive game, both teams combined for only 11 hits. The Owls with six hits, led by Lippo's two hits including the only RBI of the game. The Owls were also walked seven times and allowed 12 batters left on base.

The Owls will continue their NAC schedule as we head to the final weeks of the regular season. The Owls will take on U-Maine System rival, UMF in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday.
