Owls Sweep Lesley in Weekend Doubleheader

Owls Start off Season with 2-0 NAC Record

MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS – The UMPI Women's Basketball Team opened their North Atlantic Conference schedule with a pair of wins over Lesley University on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday afternoons Matinee saw the Owls jump out to a quick 9 to 1 lead and finish the 1st Quarter with a 19 to 3 advantage over the Lynx. Jelecia Ma'Gee Hodges scored the game's 1st basket on a pass from Emily Wheaton. Wheaton hit 2 free throws and then a 3-pointer and UMPI got out to 7 to 0 lead and were on their way to a 73 to 45 victory capping off a two-game sweep over NAC opponent Lesley University.

UMPI played very well on the defensive end of the court in the first 20 minutes of the game forcing the Lynx into difficult shots while Lesley only shot 18% from the field. The Owls did not shoot the ball exceptionally well either but still scored 36 points in the half and had a commanding lead.

Aleia Milano and Emily Wheaton paced UMPI with 15 points each with Wheaton adding 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Lexi Ireland had a good all-around game scoring 13 points and added a game high 11 rebounds,  while adding 3 steals and 2 assists. All 11 UMPI players got in the scoring column with Jelecia Ma'Gee Hodges and Lauren Magno each scoring 6 points each and Kiersten Shade adding 5.

In Friday night's weekend NAC regular season opener, the Owls scored 6 early points as Lexi Ireland scored the 1st hoop in the paint followed by a layup from Indya Smith on a pass from Aleia Milano. Ireland then scored again on an assist from Emily Wheaton. Milano scored the next 2 buckets and then after a Lynx score, Wheaton drained a 3 pointer and Milano hit 2 free throws for a 15 to 4 UMPI lead. The Owls finished the 1 Quarter with a 24 to 12 advantage. Ireland, Wheaton and Kourt West each scored early in the 2nd Quarter to bump the Owls lead to 30 to 14 and on their way to an 83 to 54 win.

Four players scored in double digits for the Owls. Milano led the way with 18 points, Wheaton scored 15, Ireland 12 and Smith scored 10. Milano and Smith each had 4 steals and West led the team in rebounding with 9 boards.

Next up: UMPI will host NAC opponent Thomas College on Tuesday December 5th at 7:30 PM.
