Owls Baseball Fought Hard vs Utica in Doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Utica University baseball team swept the Owls in their doubleheader Monday morning at historic Chain O'Lakes Park in the RussMatt Baseball Tournament. The Pioneers doubled up on the Owls 16-8 in the opener. A closer contest in the second game, as Utica held off UMPI 5-3. Utica, which is on a five-game winning streak, is now 5-1. The Owls are still looking for their first win (0-6) of the season.

Utica jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one. Joe Battista (Gansevoort, NY) hit a two-run triple to center, while teammate John Son (Mellville,NY) knocked home Battista with a sacrifice fly to center. Son and Battista combined for nine runs, as Son drove home six, while Battista had three RBIs. The Owls got back a run in the second. Anthony Searles (Middleburg, FL) doubled to left and scored moments later as Kobe Saunders (Calais, ME) reached on a sac bunt back to the Pioneers starter Derrike Goutremont (Chaumont, NY) , threw the ball into right. Both teams traded runs in the third frame. Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA) hit a sac fly to left with the second Owls run.

 It was the closest that UMPI was going to get as Utica outscored the Owls 12-6 in the final four innings. In the UMPI fourth, with two outs, Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) reached on an error and scored on a triple to right by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL). The Owls crossed the plate five times in the sixth. Burns and Blake each had a two run single. Utica put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Utica jumped out once again, with all of their five runs in the first. The Owls scored a run in the fourth as Blake doubles home Burns, who reached on an error. Burns connected on a two-run blast over the left field fence. Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) went the distance for the Owls, as he gave up nine hits while striking out three. Kooper Knabe (Cortland, NY)  captured the win as he tossed six innings, striking out eight. Brendan May (McGraw, NY)  pitched the seventh for the save.

Game 1 (16-8 – Pioneers):

On the mound: Jordan Young (Graham, NC)  took the loss for the Owls, as he pitched five innings while striking out four. Ian McCray (Corinth, ME) pitched the sixth inning. Branden Oliver (Lincoln, ME) and Blake Howes (Patten, ME) pitched the seventh for UMPI. Derrike Goutremont took the win for the Pioneers, while Ben Freeman (Liverpool, NY)  and May followed.

At the plate: Timothy Burns, Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) and Jones each had a pair of hits for UMPI. Joey Blake and Burns knocked home three. Andrew Salbinski had three hits for the Pioneers. Joe Grossley, Battista and Son all had two hits. Son (6 RBIs) and Battista (3 RBIs) combined for nine of the 16 runs.

Game 2 (5-3 – Pioneers):

On the mound: Jones pitched the complete game for the Owls, as he gave up nine hits while striking out three. Knabe captured the win as he tossed six innings, striking out eight. May pitched the seventh for the save.

At the plate: Burns led the Owls with two hits on his three at bats, hitting in two runs including a two-run homer. 

The Owls (0-6) will continue their annual spring tournament with a doubleheader against Mass College of Liberal Arts Wednesday morning starting at 9:15 am.
