PRESQUE ISLE, ME – Callister Montembeau (Kennebunk, ME) lifted a solo homerun with one out in the top of the eighth inning and UMF added an insurance run in the ninth, as the Beavers defeated UMaine Presque Isle 5-3 in the nightcap of a NAC doubleheader Friday on the James Dyer Field at Presque Isle High School. The Beavers swept the doubleheader as they won the first game, 4-2. UMF is now 7-27 overall (4-8 in NAC) while the Owls fall to 2-29 overall and 1-11 in league play.
In game two, UMF jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, MA) singled to right and moved to second on a passed ball. Ryan Sargent (Windham, ME) then connected on a two run blast over the right field fence. The Beavers made it 3-0 in the top of the second. Sam Peterson (South Berwick, ME) doubled to right center with one out. Hunter Labossiere (Oxford, ME) singled to left, moving Peterson to third. Peterson scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Bloch. The Owls tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Two runs scored on a throwing error and Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) tied the game with a bases-loaded walk.
In game one, Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA) led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field. After a strikeout, Lippo stole second and scored moments later on a two run homer by Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL). UMF cut the lead in half with a solo run in the third, and put the game away with three runs in the seventh.
Beavers 4-2
On the mound: Ky Morris (East Wenatchee, WA) picked up the win for the Beavers, as he pitched the first six innings. Aaron Goschke (Gorham, ME) got the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh. Jones took the loss as he pitched into the seventh (6 ? innings). Dakota Morrow (Presque Isle, ME) closed out the game for the Owls, pitching on his old high school mound.
At the plate: Bloch and Sargent had two hits apiece for the Beavers. Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) had two hits for UMPI, while Burns had a homer in the first inning.
Beavers 5-3
On the mound: Beavers starter Bloch pitched 4 ? innings. Anthony Boyle (Wallingford, CT) pitched the next 2 ? innings, while Chris Albert (Bradley, ME) threw the final two innings for UMF. For the Owls, Chadwick started on the bump as he threw the first four frames. Jordan Young (Graham, NC) pitched 3 ? innings and Spencer Harmon (Sidney, BC, Canada) pitched 1 ? innings.
At the plate: Nate Coombs (Thomaston, ME) , Danny Terhune (South Burlington, VT) and Peterson all had two hits for the Beavers. Ricky Goupille (Presque Isle, ME) had a pair of tallies for the Owls.
The Owls will close out their NAC schedule this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Northern Vermont University-Lyndon.
