AUBURN, ME – The Central Maine Community College baseball team won both games of the doubleheader, 18-5 and 10-2, over UMPI Saturday afternoon at the CMCC Turf field complex. The Mustangs are now 19-10, while the Owls fall to 1-18.
In game one, CMCC jumped out to a 8-0 lead before the Owls came back with five runs. The Mustangs scored 10 runs the rest of the way. In game two, the Mustangs Jimmy Reed (Skowhegan, ME) led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and moved to second on an infield groudout. Colton Frisbee (Queen Creek, AZ) lined an RBI single to center. CMCC made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second, when Mason Booker (Lisbon, ME) tripled to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Craig Brunett (Ellsworth, ME). After the Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the third, they added another pair in the fourth on a two run single by Zach Mann (New Gloucester, ME). CCMI made it 9-0 with three more tallies in the fifth.
The Owls ended the shutout by scoring a pair of runs in the sixth frame. Timothy Burns (Green Cove Springs, FL) led off with a double to left, and moved to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) was hit by a pitch. Jones stole second, and Burns scored on an infield groundout by Anthony Searels (Middleburg, FL). Jones scored on a RBI double by Preston Bass (Crestview, FL). CMCC added a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Game 1 (18-5 – Mustangs):
On the mound: Payton Jones earned the start for the Owls pitching the first four innings. Jordan Young and Brandon Oliver each got some time as well, totaling five strikeouts among them.Shane Sullinvan earned the win for CMCC, pitching six innings, striking out five and allowing five earned runs.
At the plate: Anthony Searels finished with two hits on three at bats, one being a double and recording an RBI. Joey Blake also hit a double in the game, his solo hit of the day.
Game 2 (10-2 – Mustangs):
On the mound: Dakota Marrow (Presque Isle, ME) took the loss as the Owls hurler pitched into the fourth inning. Brock Thompson (Cary Plt, ME) pitched the next two innings. Spencer Harman (Sidney, BC, Canada) pitched the sixth inning. Garrett Harvey (Monticello, ME) took the win as he threw six innings, striking out six batters. Ayden MacWhinnie (Westbrook, ME) struck out the side in the seventh.
At the plate: Burns had two hits for the Owls. Kaleb Thompson (Brunswick, ME) had three hits for the Mustangs. Frisbie and Reed each had two hits for CMCC, while Mann knocked home three teammates.
The Owls will head to Waterville, ME next Saturday, and open their conference schedule with a doubleheader at Thomas College.
