Owls Split the Beavers in NAC Doubleheader Play

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The UMPI Owls and UMF Beavers split two evenly matched ballgames this past weekend at Wieden Gymnasium on the Campus of The University of Maine at Presque Isle. These were important games as both Teams are vying for a berth in the North Atlantic Conference Playoffs in February.

UMF eked out the first game on Friday night in a back and forth battle with a 53 to 48 victory. The Beavers jumped out to 18 to 9 lead after the 1st Quarter as the Owls struggled to get their offense going. UMPI picked it up a bit in Quarter number two outscoring the Visitors by 10 points and went into the halftime break trailing just 26 to 25 on a driving layup by Emily Wheaton with 8 seconds remaining. Olivia Gray scored 14 points in the 1st half to keep the Owls close while the Beavers Ruby McInnes had 8 of her 13 total points in the opening 20 minutes of play.

UMPI went into the 4th period ahead by 3 points but once again went cold with their shooting managing to only net 7 points in the final frame. The Owls brought the game to within 3 points, 51 to 48 on two Lexi Ireland free throws with 39 seconds left in the game but could not get any closer.

Ireland led the Home Team with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Gray scored 16 and had 4 rebounds. McInnes led UMF with 13 points and Sarah Poli scored 10 points while pulling down a game high 16 rebounds.

Saturday's game 2:

The Beavers jumped out to a 17 to 8  lead with 4 minutes left in the 1st Quarter before UMPI went on an 11 to 0 run to close out the Quarter with a 19 to 17 lead. Both teams were cold shooting early in the 2nd frame before the Owl's Kiersten Shade scored on a left handed drive to the hoop and Lexi Ireland followed that up with 2 points on a nice post move in the paint and UMPI had a 23-17 advantage. Grace Dwyer hit a 3 pointer for UMF with 1 minute to go in the half and Emily Wheaton scored on a driving layup with 5 seconds left to give UMPI a 28-25 lead at the intermission.

The 2nd half saw the Owls grab a short-lived 8 point lead before getting into foul trouble and a UMF 9 to 0 run on a  layup by Jessica Dow finished the 3rd Quarter with UMPI only up 43-40. The Owls again stretched their lead to 49-40 early in Quarter number four on two made free throws by Aleia Milano. UMF would battle back to a 1 point deficit (53-52) when McInnes scored in the paint late in the 4th. Emily Wheaton capped off the win by nailing 2 free throws with 1 second left in the game for a 55-52 UMPI win. Lexi Ireland had a monster game with 14 points and a game high 20 rebounds while Olivia Gray had another outstanding game scoring 14 points and adding 7 rebounds for the (10-6) (5-2 NAC) Owls. Dow led UMF (6-11) (3-4 NAC) with 19 pts and Jaycie Stevens added 12.
