More than a month ago, the UMPI Women's Soccer team pulled off the upset of the year in the NAC with a 1-0 victory over Maine Maritime Academy despite being out-shot 36-8. The Owls ran into the defending NAC champs again on Saturday, and unfortunately for the visitors, it was a much different story.
Some of the story was the same however, namely the high volume of shots the Mariners put up. This time, they found the net early. The Mariners scored four times in the first half, in the 15th, 25th, 31st, and 34th minutes. The Owls found themselves in a hole 4-0 at half, after being out-shot 17-4.
Early in the second half, UMPI did find the scoreboard as Alexis Ireland scored her fourth goal of the year assisted by Madelynn Morrow—the Owl's point leader. Unfortunately, this duo couldn't connect any other time on the day, and the mariners matched what they did in the first half, scoring in the 62nd, 71st, 72nd, and 77th minutes to put up an impressive eight goals on 32 shots.
The Owls managed seven shots on the day. Three came from Morrow, and one from Ella McCarthy, Camryn Ala, Willa Evans, and the aforementioned Ireland.
The Owls fall to 3-6-2 on the season and 1-6-1 in conference play. They would travel back up north to face the University of Maine at Fort Kent the next day.
