FARMINGTON, ME
The UMPI Women took to the court for the second straight day, continuing their conference weekend. This time, they'd square off with the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers, a program that has only been improving in recent years. The Owls would be game, and stayed right with the Beavers throughout the entire game, matching shot for shot.
How it Happened:
The owls worked out to an early lead at 15-10, but that lead would dwindle and eventually disappear before the end of the first quarter, with Farmington in front, 24-19. From there, it became a game where UMF would lead, but never pull away. The Beavers led by as many as 14 however, at 35-21, and threatened to take a stranglehold on it. The Owls responded, and chipped away pulling within seven at halftime. They continued that pattern of chipping away, while Farmington would counter with their own mini runs. This trend is what wrote the entire second half. Entering the fourth quarter it was 57-53 Beavers. In the fourth, the Owls continued to match the Beavers but could never put it all together to erase the deficit. The Beavers ultimately prevailed, 70-61.
Top Performers:
The Owls were led by Alexis Ireland with her 23 points and 16 rebounds. UMPI got production from a number of players, as Anaira Ayala contributed 18 points on four threes. Camryn Ala had nine, while Lindsay Hamilton had eight, and 14 boards. The Owls were affected by the injury bug and had just seven active players but fought hard the whole through and ultimately came up just short of a huge conference victory.
Next Up:
The Owls finish their first semester at 1-8, and 0-2 in league play. They will have a break until they reconvene at the New Year for practices before they jump right back into conference action, hosting the Lesley University Lynx on January 7.
