The UMPI Men's Basketball is off to a historic start as they reach the 6-2 mark for the first time since the 1994-1995 season. The Owls defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Wednesday evening for the second three-game winning streak in this young season.
How it Happened:
It was a game that struggled to find a rhythm as both teams pushed the pace but played with great physicality. UMPI led early at 15-7, but UMFK chipped away into that slim lead to bring it within two points at 28-26 with 5:40 left in the first half. The Owls never surrendered their lead despite the Bengals' pushes. They closed out the half on a 15-3 run to take a 14-point lead at the break. The game hovered at this differential for a while until a late game run by UMFK brought the game within five points at 76-71 with 4:06 to go. The Owls were ready for the occasion however, closing the game out on a 12-3 run, and taking the victory by a score of 88-74.
Top Performers:
Once again, there were many heroes for the Owls who continue to play well as a team. Akhe McMichael, the leading scorer on average through the first seven games of the season, led UMPI again with 25, going 10 for 14 from the field. Gilbert Jean Mendez also shot well, with 19 points, and a pair of threes, going 8-14 overall while securing eight rebounds. Saquan Carswell had 16 points off the bench making it three double digit performances in the last four games for him. Dwaine Williams had 14 points with a two trays. Doug McCalla had eight, with 11 rebounds to clean up the glass for UMPI.
Next Up:
UMPI will look to make it four in a row, when they host Fisher College this Saturday for a 3 p.m. start.
