Owls Take Flight: UMPI Secures Redemption Win Over Hornets

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE - In a captivating North Atlantic Conference matchup, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls showcased resilience and determination as they bounced back to secure a crucial win against the Hornets of Vermont State University Lyndon. After a heart-wrenching defeat at the hands of the Hornets the previous day, the Owls flipped the script with a thrilling 69-66 victory, clinching a spot in the playoffs in dramatic fashion.

The Owls wasted no time asserting themselves, establishing a slight lead after the first quarter while stifling the Hornets' offense to under 30% shooting from the field, limiting them to just 12 points. Holding a four-point advantage heading into halftime, UMPI remained composed and focused on maintaining their edge.

The intensity only heightened in the second half as both teams traded blows, refusing to back down. With just over three minutes remaining in the game, the Owls found themselves with a seven-point lead, seemingly in control. However, the Hornets mounted a ferocious comeback, closing the gap to just one point with under two minutes left on a clutch three-pointer.

In the closing moments, Graduate Student Emily Wheaton delivered a clutch performance, sinking a contested floater in the lane to extend the Owls' lead to three points. A pivotal steal by UMPI, along with a missed shot late thwarted the Hornets' comeback efforts, preserving the victory and securing their spot in the playoffs.

Senior standout Alexis Ireland led the charge for UMPI, delivering a stellar performance with 20 points and 12 rebounds, securing a double-double while going a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. Wheaton made her presence felt with 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists, including the game-sealing shot. Aleia Milano also made significant contributions, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Off the bench, Lauren Magno provided a crucial spark, draining three timely three-pointers to contribute nine points and bolster the Owls' offensive arsenal.

With this pivotal victory, the Owls have punched their ticket to the playoffs, setting the stage for an exciting postseason journey. Stay tuned for the full playoff release as UMPI aims to make a splash in the postseason.
