Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls Fall to the #1 Seed MMA in Doubleheader Weekend

Castine, ME – The UMPI  Women's Basketball Team made the weekend trip to the coast hoping to pull off an upset over the North Atlantic Conference 1st place Maine Maritime Mariners, however, the Owls ran into a very talented and hot shooting MMA squad. UMPI lost Game #1 on Friday night 90 to 53 and the Host Team also won Game #2 on Saturday 92 to 62.
 
Game #1: A jumper and a layup by the Owls Lexi Ireland 3 minutes into the 1st Quarter saw UMPI trailing 7 to 6 early on. A three pointer by Olivia Gray at the 5:03 mark and two more free throws by Gray shortly after had the Owls down by 7 points 18 t0 11. The Mariners would then finish out the 1st frame on a 15 to 2 run and grab a commanding 33 to 13 lead.
 
Emily Wheaton would nail a three pointer 1 minute into the 2nd Quarter, however, MMA would push the lead up to 23 points on a 3 pointer by Maria Barela. The Mariners took 48 to 28 lead into the half. MMA put the game away in the 3rd Quarter outscoring the Owls 28 to 8.
 
Alexis Ireland led UMPI with 19 points while adding 6 rebounds. Kiersten Shade added 10 points. Evelyn Dagan paced the Mariners with 16 points while Erianna Moore scored 13 and Barela 12 points.
 
Game #2: The Owls battled the #1 Seed Mariners in the opening quarter trailing by six, 18 to 12 after the 1st Quarter. Two free throws each by Ireland and Lindsay Hamilton, and a jumper by Wheaton saw the Owls down 12 to 8 with just 2 minutes remaining in the Quarter. A three pointer by MMA's Dagen 4 minutes into the Quarter gave the Mariners a 28 to 14 advantage. An Ireland score in the pain closed out the half with MMA leading 42 to 25. The Mariners would outscore UMPI 50 to 37 in the 2nd half.
 
Ireland paced the Owls (12-9 overall, 5-5 NAC) with another fine effort scoring 17 points and adding 6 rebounds. Wheaton scored 12 points and Olivia Gray added 9. Moore led the Mariners (15-4 overall, 10-0 NAC)  with 17 points and Barela added 16.
