PRESQUE ISLE ME,
For the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls Women's Soccer team, It seems as if everything is falling into place for the young squad. On Saturday, their first big test came to town in the form of the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners. MMA went all the way to the NCAA Division III tournament last year.
The Mariners would play like a squad poised to make another deep run putting up some impressive offensive statistics. They dominated possession time and shots on goal. In Soccer however, that doesn't always determine the winner. The Owls scored early in the first half and then played pesky defense all day aided by some astounding goalkeeping to seal the 1-0 victory.
The game's lone goal came from the very jump in the 3
rd minute. Freshman
Madelynn Morrow got behind the defense and chipped it past the keeper. She has now scored a goal in all three games. The assist came from
Shelby Theriault, the first of her career.
Alexis Ireland paced the offense, firing 4 shots, and 3 on goal. Other than that, it was a defensive game for the Owls. They squandered the Mariner attack all game long.
The Mariners were relentless, outshooting the Owls 38 to 8. Freshman Keeper
Mia Voisine stole the show, making stellar save after stellar save. She finished with 17 saves, an unbelievable mark that ties for the lead as the highest single game total in the conference on the year.
The Owls stay unbeaten with their first conference win of the year, and continue to impress, moving to 3-0.
They will now face another test as the Husson University Eagles come up to Presque Isle this Tuesday for a 3:30pm start.
