Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ricky Goupille

Owls Struggle in Second Half, Lose Close One to Hornets

PRESQUE ISLE, ME

The UMPI Women's Basketball team began the first of six home games in a row Sunday afternoon when they hosted the Lyndon Hornets. UMPI got off to a fast start with 24 points in the first quarter. But after that, they struggled to find points. Lyndon eventually was able to ice the game and came away with the eight-point road victory.

How it Happened:

Shots were raining down for UMPI in quarter number 1 as they made eight field goals, including four three pointers. This helped the Owls out to a nine-point lead after one quarter. The exact opposite happened for UMPI in the second quarter as they went 0-14 from the field in the quarter. They managed three free throws, and only trailed by a point going into the locker room. The Owls stayed with the Hornets most of the third quarter until the end when Sage Smith hit two three pointers in a row to give the hornets a five-point lead. Lyndon opened up the fourth on a run to complement their third quarter finish and went up double digits. From there, UMPI couldn't recover despite a late game push that cut it to seven points in the last minute. Lyndon would hang on by a final score of 58-50.

Top Performers:

The Owls were led in scoring by Anaira Ayala who had 15 points, including three three-pointers. She played all 40 minutes for UMPI. Alexis Ireland had 14 points and 20 rebounds along with five assists as she continues to stuff the scoring column. Jovanna Oliva also had nine points for UMPI, including two triples.

Next Up:

UMPI will get back at it tomorrow afternoon as they drop to 2-4 in conference play. They will host Vermont State University Johnson for another NAC matchup at 12 p.m.
