Owls’ Competitive First Half Not Enough To Stay With Moose

AUGUSTA, ME

The UMPI Women's Basketball team got back to action on two days' rest with the injury bug refusing to stay completely away. UMPI used seven players, and competed very hard against UMA, but the Owls ran out of momentum in the second half.

How it Happened:

UMPI wanted to ensure they didn't have a repeat of what happened the first time they played the Moose in their season opener. The Owls certainly did not let that happen, as was proven in the first half. A pair of threes kept the Owls close at 10-7, five minutes into the game, as they were able to play tough defense the rest of the quarter trialing 15-9 after one. UMPI made shots in the second quarter, as well as some successful trips to the line kept things close. It was 25-18 with under four minutes in the half.

UMA started to kick it in gear over the last few minutes, but the Owls again, refused to let them run away with it like they did last time. A pair of Madison bridges layups at some key moments kept the Moose's runs in check as they couldn't miss a shot in the second quarter. They made five threes in the frame. The Owls also went a perfect 6 for 6 at the line in the quarter as well. UMA led 38-24 at half as their shooting success still grew the lead.

In the second half, the game seemed to catch up with the Owls, as UMA continued their deliberate attack. The Moose outscored UMPI 17-6 in the third quarter, all but putting it away as they led 55-30 after three. In the fourth, UMPI struggled to find the offense they had in the second quarter, as UMA outscored the Owls 21-9 in the final frame to close out the game 76-39.

Top Performers:

Aleyah Matheson continues to lead the Owls in scoring as she currently sits tied for fifth in the conference in scoring. Matheson had 13 points on this night, along with seven rebounds. Lindsay Hamilton was there again, with eight points but impressively, 13 rebounds as she sits second in the conference in that category. Madison Bridges had six and five, while Karen Marshall had five and eight for UMPI. Camryn Ala and Logan Curtis rounded out the scoring with three points each.

Next Up:

UMPI falls to 1-6 on the year and will get some much needed rest over the Thanksgiving holiday. They will take the court next on December 6th at Husson University.
