CASTINE, ME
The UMPI Women's Basketball team took the road for their final two games of the season after a day delay due to the recent storm. The Owls made the long trip to Castine and would run into a 29-4 Mariners team that has already wrapped up the number one seed and hosting rights for the NAC East division tournament. The Mariners jumped out to an early lead and were firing on all cylinders throughout. The Owls could never get back into it after their early defecit.
How it Happened:
Teams traded baskets for the first ten points of the game as UMPI tied it at 5-5 two minutes in. The Mariners then went on a 9-0 run to take control. In the second quarter the Mariners began to really take off. The Owls struggled from the field in the quarter while the Mariners shot at 50%, including making five threes in the second frame and they went in with a 46-15 lead.
In the second half it was more of the same story as MMA ultimately made 19 threes on the day to UMPI's 4. Eventually MMA would put up their second highest mark of the season at 96 points.
Top Performers:
The Owls were led in scoring by Alexis Ireland who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. This double-double marks her sixth in a row and her 18th on the season. She has reached a double in all but four games this season for the Owls. Anaira Ayala had 11 points including two threes. She also pitched in six rebounds. Lindsay Hamilton had seven points and a three, while Alexis Engel also had five points with a three which was the first in her college basketball career.
