BANGOR, ME
For the second straight day, the Owls had a NAC doubleheader in front of them with the defending NAC Champions. UMPI left Husson for their hotel close to 9 p.m. the night prior, and were back at the John Winkin complex less than 12 hours later. On Saturday, the narrative was much different than the night before, but unfortunately for UMPI, that didn't mean an upset win.
Game 1: (8-0 Eagles)
How it Happened:
Husson's bats were a little bit tamer in this one compared to their 35 combined runs last night, but UMPI's ran a bit colder. The Eagles put up one run in the first two innings, before a three-spot in the 3rd, to take a 5-0 lead. Husson continued to apply pressure each inning with one in the 4th, and two in the 5th. The Owls finally put up a zero in the 6th, but the damage was done by then, as a pitching and defensive masterclass from Husson forced their second shutout of the series as they won by a score of 8-0.
At the Plate:
Dylan Geren had the only hit for UMPI, as it came on an infield single in the top of the 4th. Husson shortstop Tanner Evans made a great effort on the ball that should have harmlessly rolled to centerfield, but the Speedy Geren legged it out. This was UMPI's only baserunner, as Husson came one play short of a combined perfect game.
On the Mound:
Jonah Baude got the nod for UMPI in game three of the series and threw the whole time for the Owls. He went 6 innings, allowing six earned on 11 hits. Baude struck out two batters as well.
Game 2: (8-4 Eagles)
How it Happened:
UMPI flipped the script in the final game of the series, this time jumping all over Husson's starter in the top of the 1st inning. Garrett Chadwick delivered an RBI single, and then an RBI groundout from Gabriel Wheeler made it 2-0. Husson responded accordingly however, doubling up the Owls with four runs on four hits, and took back control, leading 4-2. The game settled down from there, as the next three full innings were all goose eggs. UMPI threatened and got a runner in scoring position in the 2nd and 4th innings, but some defense and more solid pitching helped the Eagles out of it.
In the 5th, UMPI rallied again. Mason Long got things started with a single, followed by a hit by pitch and an RBI single from Dylan Geren made it 4-3. Garrett Chadwick delivered in the clutch again with his second RBI which tied the game. The Owls continued to threaten, and loaded the bases but a big strikeout got Husson out of it without any further damage.
The Eagles answered quickly yet again, as they scored two runs to get back their slim advantage at 6-4. Two more in the bottom of the 6th, and Husson now had firm control, and put the Owls away quietly going 1-2-3 in the last two frames.
Despite UMPI's efforts and scrappiness, the Eagles swept the series, winning game four by a score of 8-4.
At the Plate:
The Owls put up a series high eight hits, a lot of them timely hits. Garrett Chadwick led the way, going 3-3, and had two RBI for UMPI, as the junior continues to lead the squad in hitting, bringing his average to .410 on the year. Dylan Geren had two hits and an RBI, while Aiden Toy, Mason Long, and Sam Bay all had a single. Gabriel Wheeler had an RBI groundout as well.
On the Mound:
Garrett Chadwick earned the start and threw 5.1 innings. After a four-run first, he really settled down but ran into trouble in the last two Husson at bats. He finished the day allowing eight earned and struck out six, going 136 pitches into the game. Michael Langley relieved Chadwick and only had to throw one pitch as he caught bunt attempt on the fly and flipped it to first for the double play to end the home half of the 6th.
Next Up:
UMPI falls to 4-10 overall and 1-7 in league play. They are tentatively scheduled to play their first home games of the year down in Orono, hosting Lesley University on Sunday, April 13th, however a makeup date with St. Joseph's College is possible before those contests.
