Box Score Lynn, MA -- Despite being down 8 points at half, the Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team came away with a road victory over Fisher College 64-56 Sunday afternoon.
The Owls showed exceptional intestinal fortitude, not only outscoring the home standing Falcons 41-25 in the second half, but doing it despite being outrebounded 61-46 for the game and also only making 3 of 9 foul shots in the last two minutes of the game.
"It was something very special to watch our team come together, after Darby (Toth) took over the game when we most needed an offensive spark," noted Owl head coach Doug Carter. "I'm just so impressed with the heart and fight of this group…it's not normal to go up against such bigger and stronger athletes, be out rebounded, yet work so hard to take a win away from a very well coached team on the road."
Toth spearheaded the comeback, scoring 18 of her game-high 28 in the second half. Rebecca Campbell registered her third double-double for the Owls, scoring 15 and securing a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Churchill had 6 points, none bigger than a "nails in the coffin" three ball with just under 30 seconds left in the game to cement the victory. Toth also had 7 steals and 4 assists, Campbell had 4 assists and Churchill added 6 boards as well.
Fisher was led by freshman point Murphy Carroll who scored 19 and Alexis Akridge tallied a double-double of her own, with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Owls (2-2) will continue their road trip on Monday, playing Maine-Augusta Monday night at the Augusta Civic Arena at 5pm.
