Box Score Farmington, ME – The UMPI Owls women's basketball team traveled down state to take on North Atlantic Conference Divisional opponent the University of Maine at Farmington. The U-Maine system rival came away with the win in the first match up of the weekend double header, 79-57.
The Owls came out of the gate strong as they led the Beavers of UMF by three in the first quarter, led by the Owls 40% shooting from down town, including a 2-2 start from Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) from three. The second quarter was all UMF as they bounced back scoring 25 points while holding the Owls to only nine points in the quarter. The Beavers kept that same defensive mindset in the start of the third, holding the Owls to only seven points. While the score was even in the fourth, it was too late for the Owls.
Wheaton led the way for UMPI with 15 points, 2-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Hunter Mercier (Fairfield, ME) finished the game with 10 points on 40% shooting. Paige Espling (Caribou, ME) led the both teams with 13 rebounds on the game, including four offensive rebounds, to go along with her eight points.
The Owls will head back to UMF for another NAC Divisional game on Sunday.
