Owls Battle Eagles in Non-Conference Game

BANGOR, ME – The Husson University baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings and never looked back against their NAC rival, UMPI,  and defeated the Owls in a non-conference game, 6-4, Thursday afternoon at the Dr. John Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles are now 5-9, while the Owls fall to 1-16.

The Owls cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Preston Bass connected on a 2-run RBI single up the middle. Husson came back with a tally in the bottom of the frame. UMPI cut the lead down to one, 5-4, in the top of the seventh. Joey Blake (Standardsville, VA) lined an RBI single to center. Payton Jones (Green Cove Springs, FL) reached on an infield error, plating Joey Lippo (Coupeville, WA).

Once again, the Eagles put the game away with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Ben Phillips (Ottawa, Canada) took the win for Husson in relief. The Eagles sent six players to the hill. Jordan Young (Graham, NC) suffered his second defeat for the Owls, as he pitched the first five innings striking out two. Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, CO) pitched the final three for UMPI. Blake had two hits for the Owls. Tanner Evans (Greenbush, ME) and Akira Warren (Hallowell, ME) had two hits apiece for the Eagles.

On the mound: Young pitched the first five innings striking out two. Chadwick pitched the final three for UMPI. Brandon Brunell (Lyndonville, VT) , Jackson Thayer (Hampden, ME), Ryan Penney (Saco, ME), Mason Cycenas-Heimer (Manchester, CT), Phillips and Zane Fitzsimmons (East Machias, ME) all pitched for Husson. 

At the plate:   Blake had two hits for the Owls. Tanner Evans (Greenbush, ME) and Akira Warren (Hallowell, ME) had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
 

The Owls will travel to Auburn, ME for a doubleheader against Central Maine Community College Saturday afternoon.
