Owls Get Big Road Win at Thomas College

Waterville, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team inched closer to a North Atlantic Conference Playoff spot with an important win on the road against Thomas College on Tuesday night 68 to 53.

Emily Wheaton kicked off the scoring with a deep 3 pointer less than 1 minute into the game, however, that UMPI lead would be short-lived as the Terriers scored the next 9 points before Lexi Ireland got the Owls back on the scoreboard with 2 free throws at the 5:37 mark of the 1st quarter. A Lindsay Hamilton bucket with 1:15 remaining gave UMPI a 15 to 14 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.

Thomas would regain the lead and go up 21 to 17 before Olivia Gray scored inside for the Owls. The two teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the 1st half before 3-point baskets by Aleia Milano and Olivia Gray, the second one on an assist from Ireland, along with 2 Wheaton free throws, put UMPI ahead 32 to 28 at the intermission.

A Wheaton 3 pointer, a driving layup and 2 free throws from Milano, followed by a Gray 3 pointer saw the Owls jump out to a 42 to 28 lead two and a half minutes into the 3rd quarter. With 29 seconds left in the 3rd, the Terriers Elena Alderman scored on a fast-break layup to pull the Home Team back to within 10 points 52 to 42.

In the final 10 minutes of play, the Owls would maintain a 12 to 15 point lead and thwart off several Tomas College rally attempts. Another Wheaton 3 pointer and 2 free throws by Milano finished the scoring for UMPI in the final 2 minutes of play and the Owls came away with a 68 to 53 win.
