PRESQUE ISLE, ME
The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men's Basketball Team was off to their best start in a decade going into their home opener vs. the University of New England. In a fast-paced game, the two high powered offenses clashed, with the second half becoming the story of the game. The Owls would cruise to a 25-point victory thanks in part to their fast start to the second half.
How it Happened:
The game began with UMPI scoring nine unanswered points after a UNE three-pointer opened up the game. The Owls used that very early lead to their advantage for almost the entire first half. They led all the way until the Nor'easters took the lead at 32-30 with three-and-a-half minutes to go. UMPI closed out the half strong however, taking a five-point advantage into the locker room.
The first few minutes of the second half is what defined the game. UMPI began the frame on a 13-0 run and stretched that run out to a 19-4 run taking a stranglehold on the game and leading by 20 points. This proved to be all the Owls needed as they would never let up the remaining 14 minutes, going on to win 84-59.
Top Performers:
The Owls got a lot of production from many different places. For the second time this season, they had five players in double digits. Doug McCalla led the way with his double-double performance of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Dwaine Williams and Saquan Carswell each had 14, Gilbert Jean Mendez had 13, Akhe McMichael had 11. Myles Jones also added an impressive 15 rebounds, helping the Owls to tie their season high of 56 total boards.
Next Up:
UMPI improves to 5-2, still tied for their best start since the 2014-2015 season. They will have an opportunity to get off to their best start since the 1994-95 season when they host the University of Maine at Fort Kent for the Think Pink game. The Men will tip off at 7:30pm.
