Owls Fall to Hornets in NAC Doubleheader

PRESQUE ISLE, ME —- UMPI (3-19) took on Lyndon (4-25) for two conference games for the second straight day, after splitting the day before.

Game 1 (15-4 Hornets)

How it happened:
In the first game, UMPI fell behind early, suffering a leadoff home run by Lyndon shortstop TJ Santaw. Lyndon would score 2 in the top of the first. UMPI responded by scoring 1 of their own in the home half. Lyndon went off for six runs in the 3rd, four in the 4th, and 3 in the 5th. Lyndon made use of four long balls to jump out to a lead they wouldn't surrender. UMPI tacked on two in the third and one in the one in the seventh but it proved to be too little too late.

At the Plate:
Anthony Searels led the way going 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Joey Blake also went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. UMPI finished with nine hits as a team, and limited the strikeouts to just two for the whole game but couldn't string enough together.

On the Mound:
Spencer Harman made the start for the Owls with the hot hand after many previous quality starts. Harman ran into trouble in this one, making it through four innings as Lyndon hitters found hole after hole. Blake Howes tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief striking out two.

Game 2 (6-3 Hornets)

How it happened:
The long ball hurt UMPI again early on, as Evan Duncan continued his career weekend with a two run home run in the first. From there the game settled down. UMPI struggled to get baserunners on and across and eventually found themselves down 5-0. The owls battled hard to get back in the game and cut the lead to 5-3. Lyndon tallied one more in the 7th and blanked the Owls in the last half to win 6-3.

At the Plate:
The bats could not seem to catch a break in this one. UMPI struck out just twice in this game as well for a respectable total of 4 on the day, but only managed two hits. They hit balls hard but right at Lyndon's defense. The Hornets went errorless in this game as well. Payton Jones helped out his own cause at the plate having both of UMPI's hits and a double. Timmy Burns added an RBI on a fifth inning sac fly.

On the Mound:
Payton Jones wrote another chapter of quality starts in his Owls career. Jones kept the Owls in it  the whole way. He went the complete game allowing five earned runs. Jones also struck out a season high five batters.

Next up: The Owls will take on the Husson Eagles for four NAC games around graduation weekend beginning on Friday 5/3 at 1 p.m.
