UMPI Women's Soccer took the field for the second straight day on their home pitch, this time hosting Fisher College. In what was a highly physical game, UMPI and Fisher traded opportunities and possession time at a fairly even rate, but some late game heroics by the Falcons ended up writing the story for the day.
1-0 Falcons:
Fisher started out the contest by controlling a lot of possession early but UMPI quickly flipped the script in their favor. They put up a couple shots, albeit off target but continued to threaten. Some great UMPI defense and goalkeeping throughout the first half still was a talking point while their offense looked very in sync. The Owls drew back to back corner kicks in both the 17th and 29th minutes but couldn't capitalize on those opportunities. At the first half close, the game was still a 0-0 tie.
In the second half, things were essentially more of the same, until a golden opportunity in the 66th for the Owls was staved off by Fisher keeper Mariana Hernandez Cintron, who made back to back saves on shots from UMPI first-year forward Kamryn Clavette. Fisher seemed to have late life as the game progressed however, as they took more possession time, but the pattern of great goalkeeping continued by UMPI's Natalie Miranda.
Just when the game appeared to be headed to a scoreless draw, Fisher struck in the 90th minute of the game with 30 seconds and change remaining. A deep ball from 35-40 yards out by Falcon Aliyah Shade found the back of the net, lifting the Falcons to a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Top Performers:
Natalie Miranda was excellent once again for UMPI, and was mere seconds away from her first career shutout. Despite how things ended for the Owls she was again the hero making numerous acrobatic saves, for a total of six shots stopped. On the attack, UMPI seemed to find their groove although they didn't have a goal to show for it. Abby Doughty put up five shots, two of which were on target, and Kamryn Clavette had two shots, both on goal. Camryn Ala and Taylor Marston each had a shot on goal for the Owls.
All in all, UMPI put up 11 shots as a team compared to Fisher's 10 shots. The Falcons had seven shots on goal while UMPI had six.
Next Up:
The Owls will continue this homestand and look to get in the win column when they host U-Maine Augusta on Wednesday afternoon for a 1pm start time.
