University of Maine at Presque Isle Athletics Hall of Fame
The 1973-74 Men's Basketball Team will be the second Owls team to be inducted into the UMPI Owls Hall of Fame. The 1974 team went on to win the Northeast College Conference Championship.
The team was led by current UMPI Hall of Famer coach Francis McGrath (89'), who was named Maine College Basketball Coach of the Year. The team finished the regular season with a 14-4 record and 9-2 in Northeast League play. After their tournament win, the team made the NAIA District Tournament where they finished as the runner-up. The team would average 83.6 points per game and allow their opponents 73.5 points per game throughout their season.
Current UMPI Hall of Famers, such as Chuck Underwood (89'), Andy Palmer (91'), Ed Marshall (99'), and Paul Bouchard (13') helped lead this team to a tremendous season. Underwood led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging nearly 27 points per game and 16.8 rebounds per game, as he was named the Northeast College Conference Championship Tournament MVP and NAIA All-American, while regularly joining the top ten in the nation in scoring throughout the year. Palmer would average 10.4 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game. Bouchard added 12.7 points per game and 7 rebounds per game. These Owls Hall of Famers along with their teammates (listed below) made history at UMPI.
