UMPI Drops First Two NAC Games

WATERVILLE, ME — UMPI (1-9) would play their first games in over three weeks as they took the Thomas Terriers (6-11) for the first of two doubleheaders in as many days. 

Game 1 (17-0 Terriers)


How it happened:

Thomas's bats got off to a hot start in the first game, a trend that would continue the rest of the series. They would score in every inning but one, highlighted by a six run 4th and five run 5th. Thomas would prevail 17-0 as UMPI couldn't get anything going at the plate. 

At the Plate

UMPI would muster just three hits against Thomas' ace Jarrad Willette. Joey Blake went 2 for 3 at the plate while Tim Burns went 1 for 2 giving the Owls their 3 total hits. UMPI was still getting on base a decent amount and left 11 runners on base throughout the game. 

On the Mound:

Jonah Baude started the game and threw four innings. Mason Long would relieve Baude in the fifth, while senior Blake Howes came in and threw the only scoreless inning for the Owls of the game. 

Game 2 (22-4 Terriers)


How it happened:

Thomas picked up right where they left off in the second game of the series, this one was to be a nine-inning game. UMPI scored their first run of the series, by tallying one run in the first frame. They held Thomas off the board until the 3rd when the Terriers would score five runs. They exploded for seven in the 5th and from there it was all Thomas, eventually winning by an impressive score of 22-4. 

At The Plate: 

UMPI's bats got going in this game totaling 11 hits as a team. unfortunately they were unable to string anything together until the end. Garrett Chadwick had a career day going 4 for 5 from the two-hole. Romeo Harris also swung it well going 3-5 with a double, recording his first career hit in the 1st inning. Tim Burns and Anthony Searels each had a pair of singles as well for the Owls. 

On the Mound:

The nine-inning game took a toll on UMPI's pitching staff. Senior Ian McCray started the game and would go 4.1 innings. Freshman Michael Langley relieved McCray in the 5th, making his second appearance of the year going 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out one. Blake Howes came on for the final innings again, pitching two full innings and allowing three earned as well.
